Giving truth to Memphis youth
By London Montaque (Overton High School)
Street art is a type of visual art that is created in public locations. It began in New York City and gained popularity in the 1980’s. Street Art is also known as urban art, and is referred to as graffiti. Traditional street art is done with spiral paint, and is usually considered vandalism.
Street art is found worldwide, and is normally found in large cities like New York City and Los Angeles. It is also very common in smaller cities such as Memphis.
Memphis student Deja Lawrence, Overton High sophomore, believes street art could actually be a good thing.
“It’s (street art) not bad, but I believe they (artist) shouldn’t do it in certain areas… Good street art inspires people.. Bad street art includes gang signs and inappropiate symbols and words.”
