Community Foundation of Greater Memphis Scholarships

Check out the scholarships offered by the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis:

In 2014-15, the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis is offering 17 scholarships, most for graduating high school seniors who intend to enroll in a two- or four-year program at an accredited institution. Scholarships that are open to other students are noted (*). Most available scholarships fall in the $1,000-$2,000 range, and often several are awarded in each category.

Deadline for this application is Monday, March 3, 2014.

  • Don Poier Memorial Scholarship Fund – students pursuing a degree in journalism or broadcasting. Past awards: $1,600.  

Deadline for these applications is Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING SPECIFIC HIGH SCHOOLS

 

  • Harold & Ida Jamison Scholarship Fund – African-American students graduating from Booker T. Washington High School or Metropolitan Baptist Church. Past award: $1,000.
  • The Original Fayette County Civic and Welfare League Scholarship Fund – African-American students from public schools in Fayette County. Past award: $2,000.
  • Joseph W. Westbrook Melrose Scholarship Fund students from Melrose High School. Past awards: $800 to $1,600.
  • Sierra Simone Wright Scholarship Fund – students from Booker T. Washington High School who will attend the University of Memphis. Past awards: $1,000 to $1,500.
  • Kicklighter Family Scholarship Fund – Raleigh-Egypt High School students attending a public college, university, or vocational school. Past awards: $1,000 to $1,500.
  • Indian Community of Memphis Scholarship Fund – students from Booker T. Washington, Central, East, Frayser, Kirby, Overton, or Whitehaven high schools. Past awards: $250 to $2,500.
  • Kylen C. Bares Memorial Scholarship Fund – students majoring in math, science, or engineering attending Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering or any Shelby County high school. Past awards: $1,200 to $1,500.

FOR STUDENTS PURSUING SPECIFIC AREAS OF STUDY

  • Abell Family String Scholarship Fund* – High school senior or current college student pursing a music degree in string performance. Applicants must submit a sample performance on CD. Past awards: $1,000 to $1,145.
  • James A. Hyter Vocal Music Scholarship Fund students pursuing a vocal music degree. A vocal audition is required for finalists. Past awards: $1,000 to $2,000.
  • Don Poier Memorial Scholarship Fund – students pursuing a degree in journalism or broadcasting. Past award: $1,600. Note the deadline for this scholarship is Monday, March 3, 2014
  • Kylen C. Bares Memorial Scholarship Fund – students majoring in math, science, or engineering attending Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering or any Shelby County high school. Past awards: $1,200 to $1,500.
  • Mildred Galloway Scholarship Fund – students studying family or consumer sciences. Past award: $1,500. 

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

 

  • Community Scholarship Fund – students living in the metropolitan Memphis area who are involved in community volunteer activities. Past awards: $1,000 to $2,000.
  • Maxine A. Smith Scholarship Fund – students who have participated in the NAACP’s ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) program. Past awards: $1,000.
  • Ruby Holmes Hefley Scholarship Fund* – students with a parent or legal guardian with disabilities, as defined by receipt of Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income. Past awards: $500 to $1,200.
  • Allen Jones/Marjorie Barringer/BarKays Scholarship Fund* – Shelby County Schools students planning to attend LeMoyne-Owen College or previous recipients currently attending LeMoyne-Owen. Past awards: $1,500 to $2,600.
  • Edna Fant McConnell Scholarship Fund* – single mothers at least 21 years old. Past award: $1,500.
  • Harold & Ida Jamison Scholarship Fund – African-American students graduating from Booker T. Washington High School or Metropolitan Baptist Church. Past award: $1,000.
  • Stephen Lowe Memorial Scholarship Fund – students from Bolton High School or Faith Baptist Church. Past awards: $1,100 to $1,600.
