Giving truth to Memphis youth

It’s that time of the year for the annual Middle College High School camping trip.
This year, the overnight camping trip was October 3-4 and at the Grove in Cordova, located at 849 Rocky Point Road. Sponsored by Middle College’s student council, this is actually only the second year for the camping trip.
Approximately 110 students usually are in attendance. And attendance is based on the number of school “infractions.” Students with more than one infraction are ineligible to go on the trip.
Some students did not attend the trip for reasons besides infractions, however, including 11th grade Middle College student Homer Jones.
“I had soccer practice,” he said.
“I’m not a outdoor person and I hate the outdoors,” ninth grader Claudia Spivey said.
After reaching the site by bus, students engaged in activities including volleyball, basketball, karaoke, nature walks, board games, rap sessions, talent shows, movies, leadership development sessions, and of course a big cook out and camp fire.
For 12th grader Breana Collier, who went on the camping trip it was a great experience.
“It was a fun trip and it was a great way for all the students to get away from school and mingle with their friends,” she said.
“I had fun with all my friends and it was a very fun trip,” said senior Mary Pirtle.
“I had lots of fun enjoying the different activities and hanging with friends,” added sophomore Monica Jones.
Overall, it seems the students that went on the camping trip had lots of fun. It also may have been a great way for the students to get away from school and home and just hang out with friends. For the seniors, this may have been one of the most memorable trips and for the freshmen; this may just be the beginning of notable school memories. Even the staff on the trip seemed to really enjoy themselves, and have fun playing the different sports with the students, and the trip’s guest speakers.
